I think that most teachers probably violate copyright guidelines regularly and unknowingly. There are so many copyright guidelines to follow that it would be hard for anyone to keep up with all of them. The guidelines that I thought were most important were:
1. The use of printed materials
2. Videos and
3. Internet
Of these three, the most important guidelines I think are those for using the internet and printed materials. For obvious reasons, teachers need to be knowledgeable about the copyright laws for using internet resources since children are using the internet more and more in elementary school. Many of them use the internet to complete projects, so the teacher needs to know what is and is not allowed. I think the copyright guidelines for using printed materials in the classroom are probably the most violated by teachers. I never realized that when you make copies of something from a book, newspaper, magazine, etc, there is a limit on how many words, pages, pictures, and the number of times the resource can be used. I’m almost sure that this is the most violated copyright guideline in the classroom.
