Copyright Guidelines

I think that most teachers probably violate copyright guidelines regularly and unknowingly. There are so many copyright guidelines to follow that it would be hard for anyone to keep up with all of them. The guidelines that I thought were most important were:
1.      The use of printed materials
2.      Videos and
3.      Internet
Of these three, the most important guidelines I think are those for using the internet and printed materials. For obvious reasons, teachers need to be knowledgeable about the copyright laws for using internet resources since children are using the internet more and more in elementary school. Many of them use the internet to complete projects, so the teacher needs to know what is and is not allowed. I think the copyright guidelines for using printed materials in the classroom are probably the most violated by teachers. I never realized that when you make copies of something from a book, newspaper, magazine, etc, there is a limit on how many words, pages, pictures, and the number of times the resource can be used. I’m almost sure that this is the most violated copyright guideline in the classroom.

  1. Sarada,
I fully agree with you about the use of printed materials being the copyright concern most violated by teachers. I think when teachers find information that is helpful to their students, they are concerned about helping the students, as opposed to breaking a law. I have witnessed educational situations where hard copies of materials have been used for so long that individuals cannot even reference back to where the material originated.

  2. I also agree with your list and Rose commit. The teacher is just trying to help the students. I read in some of our materials that the teacher has less restriction of the copyright laws. It is important that the teacher not abuse the Fair Use policy just for busy work in the classroom. My concern with the Internet and children is that if constrainst is not in place the students can be vulnerable to unpleasent exposure.

  3. Kids today are gravitating more and more to technology based instructions. This new phenomenon called internet is taking over our student’s lives and as an aspiring teacher it will be unwise for me to turn a blind eye to the importance of technology in today’s society. One will need to embrace the importance of technology to use in educational instruction but to do this a person will need to also have the knowledge of copyright laws.

  4. Sarada,
I was unaware that there was a particular number of information from websites that you could print, such as pictures and pages. Thank you for making me aware of that.

  5. This is a very interesting topic that absolutely hits home. Teachers are extremely limited with the amount of resources they have to use that are effective as well as appropriate without wondering and worrying about what copyright laws they are violating. Though on the other hand, as educational leaders we should set an example for our students. We teach them to preserve the works of others and give credit where it is due; in return we should do the same.
